The below digital tools will enable you to extend your collaborative learning opportunities and reach out to other learners and resources available on the web. Don’t try to be in all spaces at ones and use all tools listed below. Start with a limited amount and see what works best for you. Progressively you will become more familiar with how best to utilise the suggested technologies. If you are an experienced online learner and familiar with other digital tools, please feel free to use them for your learning and share with others so that we can all learn from each other.
If you have a smartphone or tablet, you will also be able to download the related mobile apps (available for Apple and Android devices). Please note, you are not expected to use all the below as FDOL feeds will be available through the FDOL WordPress site.
WordPress: This is where you are now. We are using this WordPress site as the FDOL course site. Please remember to visit this frequently to find out more about the course, how it is structured and what comes next. The FDOL pathway can be accessed via units. It would be useful to follow this site by clicking on the button Follow #fdol132 (on the right) and receive FDOL updates to your inbox.
Google + community: For course communication and collaboration an FDOL132 community will be set up. This will be available in time for the start of the course. Conversations happening there are linked to the FDOL course units and will be contained within the same space. Please note the Google + community discussions are driven by the community itself and can be used by any FDOL participant learning autonomously or in a PBL group. Also, external to FDOL learners are also very welcome to join and participate in the discussions happening there. Some participants might also act as Resources people depending on expertise, and might also be useful for PBL group activities. This is also the space to introduce yourself and ask questions. You will also be able to use the Google + hangout feature there for synchronous meetings with your group and other learners. Please note, you need a Google account and to create public Google+ profile to join the community.

Google doc: This will be used for collaborative learning tasks. For the PBL groups, documents can be set-up to enable easy collaboration without the use of a Google doc account. Feel free to create additional shared spaces using Google doc if required and or set-up your own non-facilitated PBL group.
Portfolio (optional for open learners): Students studying towards university credits, please check with your institution the requirements regarding the use of a portfolio. If you are an open learner, it would be beneficial also to use a portfolio to capture your reflections and learning as you progress in the course. If you don’t have a portfolio at the moment, consider using WordPress.com or another platform you are familiar with. We also encourage you to comment on posts contributed by other participants. Remember to add the #FDOL132 hashtag and @openfdol and connect your portfolio to your Twitter account (see social media settings in your dashboard) so that when posting something linked to the FDOL course it can be shared more widely with other FDOL learners.
You might want to think about capturing your learning in a portfolio as you could explore options to accredit this learning.
Twitter (optional): It will also be useful to use your Twitter account or create one and follow @openfdol which is FDOL’s Twitter presence. The hashtag of the course is #FDOL132. Additional conversations linked to FDOL will happen there. The @openfdol Twitter feed is also displayed on the FDOL homepage.
Diigo group (optional): A FDOL group has been set-up in diigo to share resources linked to the FDOL course. Only a few resources will be added by the organisers as we would like the participants to share the resources they have found useful for their learning. Please create an account first if you don’t have one already and then start adding resources you have found valuable to this collection and remember to tag the resources.
Slideshare (optional): We will be using Slideshare to share presentations used but also create a selection of presentations by others which are relevant to FDOL. Feel free to check there regularly. Presentations used in webinars will also be made available here in WordPress in the related units so that they can be accessed at a later stage (again).
Scoop it (optional): This is a useful curation tool. We have put together an FDOL132 scoop which can be found here (RSS feed is also available from the home page) If you would like to create your own Scoop it linked to FDOL, feel free to create an account at http://www.scoop.it/ and share with others via Twitter, the Google + community or your portfolio.
Creative Commons Licences: Remember that this is an open learning space and all resources shared and created will be available under a creative commons (cc) licence. Please consider sharing your contributions and creations under cc to enable wider use and re-purposing.
